. they've never had a fight. anybody who has seen john mccain or many of the other senators who were on that panel do questioning before, i remember john mccain grilling don rumsfeld in hearings. i remember john mccain grilling secretary baker in hearings. it's their job. they are there to advise and consent. somebody needs to put these candidates through a scrutiny. the questions need to get asked. >> what about the relevance of the questions they asked, that they were old questions. >> oh, don, look. a lot of it goes to -- chuck hagel couldn't answer questions about things he said ten years ago, and he couldn't answer questions, for example, about the united states policy towards iran. he couldn't answer any questions. basically, the only question he answered accurately was when he got a softball question from senator jack reed who asked him how he got the job. and he said he had told president obama he wasn't qualified. that's probably the only truth he said in that entire hearing. it was a hearing that was full of chuck hagel saying i should have said, i meant to say, let me clar

endorsed john mccain as president. he went to the republican convention we are criticized, the democrat eck nominee barack obama and endorsed mccain and sarah palin. and when joe campaigned in 20080 with mccain, comes back to the senate and senate democrats make him the chairman of standing committee, contrast that with chuck hagel. 84% of americans for conservative action, voting record in his canner radio, voting for the bush tax cuts, voted for the war in iraq, voted against no child left behind but was a small government conservative, and republicans right now, particularly tea party, are not looking for converts like the democrats were with joe leiberman. they're looking for heretics. and they see in chuck hagel who never endorsed barack obama, was friendly with him, traveled with him, but didn't endorse him. they see this terrible heretic. and it's really, that is where the republicans are right now. they are looking for heretics instead of converts. and i think it's apparent in the tea party. but i think it's apparent in the ranks of the entire ranks of the party. >> you have effecti

the cuts. i don't know. does that have any chance, ed? >> not necessarily. we talked to john mccain at length after a vote on the senate floor. he said, why would we spend months approving an authorization bill only for the defense secretary to decide where to make cuts? so i think you would see some republican resistance to that kind of a plan on top of a potential democratic opposition. that's one republican proposal. the democratic proposal which may get a vote later this week would end direct payments to farmers which was part of the bipartisan farm bill passed last year, one of the few bipartisan things to get through the senate and died in the house. the other thing democrats would do is raise taxes on the wealthy. that also expected to fail in the senate. >> all right. we're waiting to hear from nancy pelosi as we just heard from speaker boehner. i want to bring in a republican of virginia and member of the armed services committee. good morning, congressman. >> good morning, chris. how are you? >> the impact in virginia would be 90,000 civilians furloughed from d.o.d., army
